Twitter Mom Follows v. 2.1

in tech

This Friday I’m switching up the Twitter Moms to follow, by diversifying. Not in color, I don’t want to cherry-pick and no one wants to be a token, so I’m sub-categorizing. Not all of these follows are moms — a lot are — but each one is a must follow within their niche.

Plus, if you’re just starting out, you need someone to follow you. Best-of lists, generally, serve the profiled and lead to more followers for them, which doesn’t really help you. Sure, you want to learn how to build influence and why they’re so popular, but if you’re only interested in big names; good luck.

Next week in addition to follows, I’ll bring you some kick ass Twitter tools. How to figure out who’s not following, your Twitter grade, and a few more goodies. As long as I stay motivated, every Friday will be Twitter Friday ’round these parts.

@MomDot — Tech Advice

Besides being a guaranteed follow-back, Trisha is running a 20-day social media course. And by course, I mean blog posts. In additional to her tech-savvy ways, she also writes about motherhood and photography. It’s difficult to teach anything by blog post alone, but she pulls it off. MomDot has been up for a little over a year and Trisha is still keeping it humble. She won’t inundate you with tech talk or pointless tweets, she’s found the right mix of life, blog, snark.

@blacktating — Breastfeeding

The awesome blog name should be cause enough, but I guess I’ll give you another reason, too. Elita is passionate about breastfeeding, attachment parenting, and going green. She features some incredible photos of black mothers breastfeeding their babies, calls out Nestle for their bullshit, and wants to support breastfeeding moms in every community. She tweets about milkers, food, and anything else that’s on her mind.

@MFFOdotorg — Mom do-gooder

Based in California, this non-profit was started by a mom to help orphaned girls around the world after she Googled ” volunteer Africa.” But, that doesn’t do Rocky Turner’s story justice. Read about the girls she loves here. Support Mothers for Others by donating underwear and dollars to help moms create sustaining homes for orphaned African girls.

@FrillyCoconut — Blog re-design

What a bargain! Looking to update your blog’s design or add a Twitter background, Jessica is the lady you want to contact. Why follow her on Twitter? Because she does amazing work at the best prices I’ve ever seen, she opens and closes her design list. Follow to make sure you blog is the next one she does.

@GirlsLunchOut — Philly specific

A networking group for mom bloggers, this just-launched collective is bound to churn out some amazing ideas and influence. Their site just launched and it’s already creating buzz with mom bloggers from Philly. Don’t live here? Start your own to meet some friends, talk geek, and get noticed.

@TheMusicMamas — Music reviews

It’s High Fidelity meets motherhood with these ladies. Music reviews, tweeting the MTV VMA’s, and one killer blog design later, they had me. Their blog just launched, but their fresh content doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Relevant, fun, and fresh.

@JSmooth995 — Pop Culture

Mr. Smooth, a founder of NYC’s longest running Hip Hop radio program, also happens to be a hilarious social commentator featured on NPR. On his video blog, you can find him talking about politics, music, and everything in-between. Intelligent and self-deprecating, there’s not one video that doesn’t keep my attention. Follow him on Twitter for his take on race, when he posts a new vlog, and just for all around awesomeness.

@Babe_Chilla — Funny as shit

Her blog posts include such titles as Fabulous Shoes Are a Right Not a Privilege, Did I Put The Vibrator Away?, and I’m Not a Good Mother. I mean, what else is there to say?

@ShelbyKnox — Feminism

A young feminist embracing that title and doing a mountain of good. She tweets out women’s history, news, and commentary. If it has to do with women, she’s not going to miss it. By following her, it means you won’t either. She’s an in-demand speaker, advocate, and all around top-notch chica.

@Pickel — Adoption

Founder of the adoption community, Within My Heart, this is an adoptive mother that advocates for transparency in adoptions. She’s the real deal. The type of woman a very large portion of us birth mothers wish we had come across a long time ago. She’s genuine and her community of writers are helping to change the silence that pervades adoption in all of its ebbs and flows. I really respect Marcie and her work.

You can find other moms and tweeps to follow here and here. Or, you can look under the “Twitter Moms” category.
